:::A Bibliophile's Treasure Chest:::

Some weeks ago, my mother called and rapid fire assaulted my ear about a new product she'd heard about. (Probably on the John Tesh show or NPR or PBS or something. God love ya, Ma)

It's a company that makes sweatshirts and tee-shirts with pictures of classic novels on the front. As a reader and writer myself, I was totally captivated by this. What reader doesn't instantly recognize the cover of a favorite classic? The jacket is almost as important as the book sometimes, (even though we aren't supposed to judge a book by its cover… let's admit that we definitely do!) and for me, finding some of my very favorite, most cherished books reproduced faithfully on apparel was a little like looking through a directory of old friends. (a book-lover's 'Facebook', if you will).

As a bonus, (as if I needed one) for every item that is purchased, they donate a book to a community in need in Africa. (that's known as a win-win.)

At this point, it wasn't if  I was going to pick one out for my mommy to buy me for Christmas, it was which one and how many.

Fortunately for mother, it was only one, but I will be back for more! In the end I had to go with "The Little Prince", as I have read and re-read that book until the pages were dog-eared and marked, and my heart remembers the words by rote. And to re-read the words is not unlike a press of my heart in my chest and a sharp intake of remembrance for myself as a child, falling in love with books, and reading and the characters that would teach me so much about the world.

“You are beautiful, but you are empty. One could not die for you. To be sure, an ordinary passerby would think that my rose looked just like you --- the rose that belongs to me. But in herself alone she is more important than all the hundreds of you other roses: because it is she that I have watered; because it is she that I have put under the glass globe; because it is she that I have sheltered behind the screen; because it is for her that I have killed the caterpillars; because it is she that I have listened to, when she grumbled, or bleated, or even sometimes when she said nothing. Because she is my rose.”
―Antoine de Saint-Exupéry The Little Prince
